I serve as an expert witness in matters involving the reasonableness of attorneys’ fees, legal malpractice (standard of care), attorney misconduct, bankruptcy professional compensation under Sections 330 and 328, and law firm billing practices. I also consult on legal ethics and AI usage in legal practice, including how generative AI affects competence, confidentiality, and billing.
My methodology is data‑driven. Working with millions of legal billing entries, my co‑author Joseph R. Tiano, Jr., and I have developed analytical frameworks that identify pre‑malpractice markers in attorney billing behavior and that quantify billing‑practice patterns across firms and practice areas. My opinions are grounded in empirical analysis, not just experience—although I bring decades of that as well, through my work on billing judgment, chapter 11 professional fees, and legal billing standards.
I am a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and the American Bar Foundation, a member of the American Law Institute, and a co‑author of both A Short & Happy Guide to AI and Legal Ethics (West Academic, 2026) and Ethical Lawyering: A Guide for the Well‑Intentioned (Aspen Publishing, 2d ed. 2025). Fun facts: I appeared in the Academy Award–nominated documentary Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, and my husband is a former Marine Scout‑Sniper.
I hold a J.D. from Stanford Law School and a B.A., summa cum laude, from Rice University. I clerked for the Hon. Joseph T. Sneed III on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and practiced bankruptcy law at Morrison & Foerster. I have served as a dean three times and as a provost and a CFO. I am a UNLV Distinguished Professor and the Garman Turner Gordon Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law, UNLV.
